I disagree with your title. "Brilliant" is obviously an opinion, which I won't argue with, but the subject named, "on Atheism", I will disagree with. The essay is about certain atheists, and the power of fiction. It is not about atheism itself. You could more accurately call it an essay about religion and the modern novel.

Yeah. This doesn't speak to my sort of atheism at all, and it only speaks to a subset of the behavior of the "New Athiests". It deals with Dawkins, but not Dennett, something that one commenter points out.

I'm an atheist, and this 'brilliant' essay told me nothing new and addressed my atheism not in the least.

I can't be the only reader who finds himself in broad agreement with the conclusions of the New Atheists, while disliking some of the ways they reach them.

This caveat/disclaimer is quite cliche, and I find it laughable.

It's as though everyone is expected to take it as read that Harris, Dawkins, Dennett, and Hitchens are all inherently horrible malevolent assholes who coincidentally make good points here and there. Anyone who has paid the slightest bit of attention to anything any of them have had to say should realize this is not the case.

Why do religious ideas deserve special protection from criticism more than any other ideas? I can mock and ridicule your favorite art, describe how completely terrible is your taste in interior decoration, call your favorite and most respected politicians every name other than "friend", and precisely describe exactly how ugly your spouse and children are with charts, graphs, statistical data, a marching band, and a laser light show, and none of that will offend you as deeply as you'll be offended when I assert that your religious ideas are nonsense. Why?

Edit: also, there is no such thing as a "New Atheist".

And very small portions of Dawkin's behavior are blown up to make it appear he acts like that all the time. If you read his writing on the subject of religion, it isn't at all firebrandish or bomb-throwing.

re: #5 Obdicut

He's certainly a more patient man than I could ever hope to be:

WW: blah blah what's the evidence for evolution?
RD: some examples of evidence are blah blah and blah, and also blah
WW: but what's the evidence?
RD: as I said, blah and blah, ad infinitum. Additionally, you can go to the blah blah museum and see blah blah and even touch it if you really want.
WW: but there's no evidence.

At which point my head would explode.

"Scientists are now claiming that they're the only ones who can speak on this issue..."

"It's almost like a religion, in which only scientists are allowed to teach in it..."

She's completely washed her brain and can't do a thing with it.

It is, to put it mildly, hypocritical of members of such an aggressively proselytizing religion as Christianity to be so offended by atheists who don't mildly keep their disbelief to themselves.

Sorry, but this article is just nonsense.

The God of the New Atheism and the God of religious fundamentalism turn out to be remarkably similar entities.

This to quote but one sentence of a writer who obviously likes to reread his own words far too much.

I don't know much about "new" versus "old" atheism, but I do know that there are many who call themselves atheists, but are really just angry with their church or god. I hate to tell them this, but they are not atheists, just confused and would probably lead happier lives if they went back to church.

Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism and the more relaxed or progressive versions of Christianity are not in their argumentative sights.

I am pretty sure Hitchens was trashing Buddhism in his book.
